Vertigo, Revered DC Imprint, R.I.P.

Creator-owned work for mature readers causes too many headaches for its corporate master...

DC To Replace 'Vertigo' And Other Publishing Imprints With Age Rating Labels [Hollywood Reporter]

"DC has announced that, starting in January [0]2020, it will close the DC Vertigo, DC Zoom and DC Ink imprints in favor of a new publishing strategy to release all published content under the DC brand... The three labels will be named DC Kids, focusing on readers aged 8-12; DC, for readers 13 and older; and DC Black Label, for content appropriate for readers 17 and above."

Bleeding Cool was on the case:

[Those DC Vertigo Comics Shuttering Rumors, The Day After]

"After a proud presentation amongst Warner Bros vice presidents, then-chairman Alan Horn asked why more Vertigo series weren't being turned into TV shows or movies. On being told that this was because many were creator-owned, he demanded changes to the contracts, that saw bankable stars such as Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman look elsewhere for new work and better deals."

DC Comics Is Shuttering The Vertigo Comics Imprint [Polygon]

"In the past year, the Vertigo line has sparked numerous controversies for DC... DC has also struggled with public shock over 'mature content' in comic books. In the fall of [0]2018, a 'production error'... resulted in Batman's penis being visible in several panels of Batman: Damned #1..."

Karen Berger tweet: "Corporate thinking & creative risk-taking don't mix. DC nixing Vertigo was a longtime coming. But hey, we changed the game & we had a blast doing it! Honored to have worked with so many incredibly talented creators & editors & thx to all our fab readers!"

No one's going to sit through another three hours of re-release with a crappy tiny two minutes added being done in a gambit to unseat Avatar.
